The item form is where you write down a thing you pack. It opens with the title Create Item from the plus button on the Catalog tab. The same form, titled Edit Item, opens when you tap an item in the catalog to change it, or when you edit an item on a list.

The item form opened from a list, with a name, the Clothing category, a weight in grams and the Quantity row

Name

Name is the only field you have to fill in. The cursor is already in it when the form opens. Spaces at the start and end are removed when you save, and runs of spaces inside the name become one.

Two items cannot share a name. Capitals and extra spaces do not make a name different, so "Rice cake" and "rice cake" count as the same name.

The name field marked in red, with the message Item name already exists under it

If you tap Save with the name empty, the field is highlighted and the item is not saved until you type one. If another item already has the name, Item name already exists shows under the field and nothing is saved.

Category

Category is optional. Tap the field to pick one of your categories; until you have some, it says No categories. The item then sits in that category's group on the Catalog tab.

Add beside the field makes a new category without leaving the form. When you save the category, you come back to the item with everything you typed still there and the new category selected. See Create a category.

Weight

Weight is optional. It takes a positive number, and decimals are fine. Anything else is refused with a message under the field. Leave it empty when you do not care what something weighs.

The unit after the field follows Weight format in Settings: g for Metric, which is the default, and lb for Imperial. You type the weight in that unit.

Quantity

Quantity appears only when you edit an item on a list. It is how many of this item you pack for that trip. Tap minus to take one away, and plus to add one; minus stops at 1. The number between them starts at the count already set on that list. The quantity belongs to that list only, so the same item on another list keeps its own. See Set how many of an item to pack.

Cancel and Save

Cancel closes the form without saving anything.

Save stores the item and takes you back to where you came from, with a short message that the item was created or updated. A change to the name, category or weight shows on every list that has the item. If saving fails, the app tells you the item was not saved and offers Try again.
